Pat Foster, Chair
As a semi-retired Certified Public Accountant with a speciality in taxes, I sold my tax practice in Chicago, and moved to my cottage in Fennville, Michigan, which is in Allegan County. I ran for Treasurer of the Allegan Democratic Party in 2004, and won. This was my first real exposure to our political system. The beginning of 2005, Allegan County had purchased new Diebold tabulators for counting the ballots.
I was very concerned about these tabulators because I had attended a conference in Columbus, Ohio shortly after the 2004 General Election, where I heard from numerous speakers that these tabulators were easily hacked. Bev Harris from Black Box Voting had a presence at this conference, and she later did an HBO documentary called Hacking Democracy that showed how easy it was to compromise the vote totals if you had access to them.
When I got back to Allegan County, I sent emails to the entire Democratic membership warning them about these new tabulators, and I was immediately reprimanded by the officers of the party for disclosing that information to the membership.
At the 2006 General Election, Allegan County used these new tabulators. I had gone to the testing and sealing of those tabulators at Manlius Township with Karen Wellman, who was with me at the Columbus conference in 2004. We watched and I took multiple photographs. I was running for County Commissioner in my district, and all of the news agencies had called the election for me, yet I lost. So I asked for a recount, and Joyce Watts, the Allegan County Clerk had a hearing to see if my race could be recounted. The video to the right, WMNC Michigan Elections II takes the audio of Karen Wellman questioning Joyce Watts at this hearing regarding how she got the results of that testing. It was by a modem on the tabulator that she connected to by a telephone line after the tabulators had been tested and sealed. If every American who places a vote on Election Day has someone like Ms Watts who can change that vote, then you don’t have much of a democracy. It gets worse.
You now know how the Russians hacked our 2016 election by telephone, and since Donald Trump was the beneficiary of that hacking, it answers the question of how close the Trump Campaign was to the Russians. It was bad enough when just the county clerk’s had access to the votes, but when you have a foreign power that has more control over our elections than do the voters, you know something needs to be done.
